We had a great first week of school! The students are getting used to the classroom and all of our 5th grade procedures. I have really enjoyed getting to know the students this week. Their personalities are starting to unfold, and I look forward to getting to know them all better in the upcoming weeks!
IMPORTANT DATES:
August 30th: Back to School Night (Parents Only) Presentation at 6:30 and 7:00, you only need to attend one.
September 16th: Challenger Museum Field Trip in Bloomington, IL. This is one of my favorite field trips of all time! If you would like to chaperone, please email me as soon as possible. I choose the first parents who contact me! Please send back your information sheet, lunch order and money as soon as possible.
CURRICULUM CONNECTION
READING: This theme we are working on Making Connections as we read. In the 5th grade, students understand the difference between surface connections and deep connections to the text. We will be testing on this theme on THURSDAY, SEPT. 1st. Typically we test on Friday, but I will be at a conference that day. I want to make sure I am here when they take their first Theme test.
MATH: We are working on place value in Chapter 1. We will be testing on this chapter next Tuesday.
SOCIAL STUDIES: We are learning about the American Revolution! The students have assembled an interactive journal in their binders that they will use to prepare them for the test.
SCIENCE: We will be learning about the Scientific Method next week, and then we will be beginning our unit on Comets to prepare us for the Challenger Museum Field Trip.
WRITING: This past week we learned about using "Vivid Verbs" in our writing to make it more exciting. We buried a lot of "dead words" in our writing journals that we promise never to use in our writing because they make our writing boring. Next week we will begin our Personal Narrative Unit.
