We had an AMAZING day in 5BB! The students had so much fun learning all about the Civil War today! Ask your child about the Underground Railroad Simulation. Students represented slaves and had to escape to freedom. Students learned first hand just how hard that was! See the pictures below!

Math: We are currently working on Chapter 3 and fractions. Students learned this week how to convert fractions to decimals and how to add mixed numbers. Next week we will only be reviewing Math on Monday. We will pick back up with lesson 3.5 on November 28th. Reading: We will begin Theme 6 when we return from break and will be working on Synthesizing as we read. I encourage students to refer to their Theme Study Guides throughout the course of the two week theme. They are a great resource to help students learn the information from the theme. Writing: We are working on our Poetry unit. This week we focused on poetic sound devices: consonance, assonance, onomatopoeia, and alliteration. The kids LOVED listening to me rap and model some of these. Okay, one student may have asked me to stop! Science: We are learning about the states of matter. Students took a really hard vocab quiz this week, and they did a great job! Social Studies: We will continue our research on seven of the most infamous Civil War Battles. Students will present their Google Slides the week we get back from break. Next Tuesday we are having our 5th grade Civil War Day. A yellow paper was sent home detailing our day. If you have not signed the permission slips allowing your child to watch the movies, please send it back no later than MONDAY. Our class had the highest AR average in the 5th grade for the month of October! I am SO proud of the amazing readers in our classroom! Mrs. Rychener, our assistant principal, was our guest reader on Friday. Our class also received a gift card to Barnes and Noble for $10! Our class will decide how to spend that this week! I have given them an extra credit sheet where they can find figurative language in the books they are reading, record it, and turn it in for 8 extra credit points. Next week we will also be analyzing poetry, and hopefully by the week before break we will begin our own writing of poetry. JUST A REMINDER.....
