Curriculum Connection
Reading: This week we are not moving on to Theme 8 in reading. We will be taking two weeks to closely examine theme in texts and do some corresponding Common Core activities. (5.RL.2 Determine the theme of a story, drama or poem from details in a text, including how characters in a story respond to challenges or how the speaker of the poem reflects upon a topic.) There will be no Spelling test for the next two weeks.
Math: We will be taking our Chapter 4 Math test on Tuesday. We will spend the rest of the week reviewing double digit multiplication, division, and place value. I have noticed that students are struggling with some problems on our Daily Math, so I wanted to take a few days and review what we have learned this year so far. Next Monday we will begin Chapter 8 on Decimals.
Science: We are continuing in Chapter 13 this week. We will be learning about Newton's Laws of Motion, and will be doing a few experiments to test out his laws.
Social Studies: We just finished our Chapter on Reconstruction. The students took their open book test last Friday. We will begin Chapter 5 "America Grows and Changes" this week. Students will be learning about the purchase of Alaska and Hawaii, the Spanish-American War, how cities grew in the late 1800's, new transportation, Jim Crow laws, and President Roosevelt's Square Deal.
Written Language: We just finished our Poetry Unit. Students will be bringing home their graded Poetry Notebooks this week. We are moving on to a short unit on Newspaper Articles this week and next.

A Few Reminders
- If your child is going to be absent, please email Beth or Leah in the office and let them know.
- If you need to communicate with me, please email me directly. I do not check messages from the different apps we use in class.
- Sign up for Class Dojo if you have not done so already. The kids LOVE using this tool!
- All quizzes and tests students take on Canvas can be reviewed at home by you AFTER the student takes the test. You can quickly see what they missed.
- Several students are starting to run low on school supplies-dry erase markers specifically. Ask your child what they are in need of! I have some extras, but unfortunately not enough for 29 kiddos.
